Winter Sowing Tomatoes
March 13, 2010

Today I began to winter sow my tomato seeds.  I can't believe how many varieties I have!  Most of the seed packets had 15-25 seeds in them so if all of these grow, I will have some available to sell at a very reasonable price.  They are unusual varieties and mostly heirloom.  Today I sowed: Polish Dwarf, Roughwood Golden Tiger, Victorian Dwarf, Giraffe, Silvery Fir Tree, Azoychka, and Druzba.  I planted Azoychka for the first time last year and was really pleased with it!  I also planted Sweet Annie which is not a tomato.  It is usually considered an herb, but not the culinary type - it is very fragrant and retains its fragrance for a long, long time.  Sometimes it is used in decorative wreaths or sachets.

My goal for this year with winter sowing was to sow at least 100 containers and with today's additions, I have 104!  We had rain for three days and the temperatures are warmer so my containers are really starting to sprout.  This time of the year is so much fun with new things beginning to grow every day!  Indoors, I have had success with brugmansia which I have never tried to grow from seed before.  I was afraid to try them outdoors and have limited space to sow indoors (and usually don't like to sow indoors), but I was fortunate that I had good luck with them!
