# 26 Grins & Giggles (Poland)
August 27, 2010

Today I will add some pictures and comments about the wooden churches in Poland.  We only saw two "up close and personal" but drove by some others.  I found them fascinating.  Apparently some were built as far back as the 16th century and are on the UNESCO list.  During this trip to Poland, I saw a few other sites listed by UNESCO.  I will have to pull up the full list and see what else there is.  Another trip?

I found the name of this church.  It is St. Clement's Church and has an enchanting cemetery next to it.  Maybe I will post some pictures of the cemetery tomorrow. Anyway, the wooden churches use horizontal log techniques and I think many, if not all, are built without using nails.  This technique was used in eastern and northern Europe since the Middle Ages.  They are called Gothic in appearance but because they are built from wood rather than brick or stone, their appearance is nothing like the Gothic churches made of those other materials.

Here is the inside of St. Clement.

These paintings are in the church and the style is commonly used in the Zakopane area.  The paint is applied to the back side of the glass.

Isn't this a beautiful design on the altar linens?

You can read more about St. Clement's Church by going to this web site:

Anyway, this second church had a wedding going on in it when we arrived --- nothing new for us!!! --- so we just looked at the outside.  (We must have gotten much more polite as the trip progressed or maybe it was more dangerous to enter the church during a wedding in the Highlands!  LOL)  The church has a beautiful wooded setting and was on a little hill.  Just a perfect place!
