Padlocks of Love on Ostrow Tumski Bridge

In Wroclaw, amid all the old customs and fine historic buildings, we found a relatively new custom.  Newlyweds bring a padlock which is often embellished with their initials, names, a special saying, and the date, then lock the padlock on the bridge and throw the keys into the river to symbolize the unbreakable bond between them.  A little touch of romance got us grinning even though we were pretty tired from walking.  It's a lovely location and gave us some understanding of a mural we saw painted on a building in the university area.  In it, a lady dressed in white is holding a key and her dress is painted with hundreds of padlocks in the design.  We saw the painting before we knew about the bridge so at that point, it made no sense.  Our remaining confusion is that she appears to be attempting to swallow the key rather than throw it into the river.  (I will leave the artisitic interpretation for that to someone who interprets paintings!)
