#14 Grins & Giggles (Poland)
August 15, 2010

My original thought was to list some special things about each day on my trip to Poland in the order in which they happened; but the more I thought about it, I decided to pull out special memories and post them regardless of which day it happened.  This report will be about storks and stork's nests.  Our planner told us about a game she would play while traveling with her family and they would look for storks' nests along the road and see who could spot more nests.   I had no idea the nests and the birds were so large.  We were totally fascinated with them.  It took me a few days to spot one from the bus window and longer still to take a picture.  Even when we found one, by the time I got my camera out and tried to snap a picture as the bus drove along -- it would be gone before I could get a picture of it.  Very near the end of the trip, we convinced the bus driver to pull to the side of the road and stop so we could all get pictures of the storks and their nest.  Don't you wonder what they thought when a busload of people all came out to snap their picture and got so excited about seeing them?  They just looked down at us like they were as curious about us as we were about them.

I giggled a bit when after I told my husband that I had pictures of storks (and he could tell I was very excited about it), he said, "I didn't know your Polish phrasebook had the words for, "Stop the bus; there are storks!"

Here is more of a close up of the nest and birds.

We were told that the storks like to live near people.  They are considered good luck.  They leave Poland towards the end of August each year and fly all the way to Africa and then return to Poland the following year.  What marvelous birds!
